Discovery Nature Preserve & Nature Playground

Location: Bay County
Acquired: 2013
Size: 12 acres

Under the management of the SBLC, Discovery Preserve, formerly known as Euclid Linear Park, has become a learning landscape for children and families. The SBLC has added a spotting scope, native wildflower and grass plantings, an improved boardwalk, birdhouses, a Chimney Swift structure, and a pavilion. In 2016, the SBLC installed an all-new nature play area with boulders, a log cabin, and challenging features for climbing, making noise, and getting outside in a fun, safe, educational environment!

A nature play area is a fun area where children and their families can interact with nature in an un-programmed manner. Nature playgrounds promote creativity and problem-solving, nurture social interaction, and provide a safe venue for children to develop an interest in the natural world.

With opportunities for natural experiences becoming scarce for children, the creation of areas for children to play, explore, and create in a natural environment are so important. The potential for children to develop an interest in STEM-related fields and careers is increased with exposure to nature at a young age.

The nature playground at Discovery Preserve is right next to the pavilion and is outfitted with interpretive signage, serving as ‘play primers’ that provide children with ideas to help them explore and learn. Natural materials are there for children to use, including boulders and logs to climb on.

This is a fun, safe place to get dirty and connect with the great outdoors!
