The Sand Point Nature Preserve is a veritable cornucopia of precious wildlife habitat. The unnamed pond, actually classified as a freshwater emergent wetland, lies just north of the Dunn Road entrance on the southern border of the Preserve.
Home to many amazing species of birds and other wildlife, our pond is a nearly perfect place. Well, perfect except that it has no name! For years we have referred to this little gem as "the unnamed pond at Sand Point Nature Preserve." No longer! We are reaching out to you, our friends and members, to help this amazing wetland have it's own identity.
Submit your idea by March 31 using the form to the right, and you may be chosen as one of 10 finalists! In early April, we will publish the finalists and go to the public for a final vote. The winner will receive a one-of-a-kind, framed custom Sand Point print commemorating the name you chose! You will also get an SBLC Field Guide shirt! Two runners-up will get an SBLC Osprey Shirt!

About the pond: This pond provides exceptional habitat for a wide variety of waterfowl, reptiles, amphibians, and aquatic mammals in one of the Great Lakes' most biologically diverse areas. It's not uncommon to see adult and juvenile bald eagles soaring over the pond, spending some time away from their nearby nests on Mud Lake. With any luck, the wood duck boxes installed last spring will play host to a few breeding pairs of striking woodies, helping to bring a few new broods into the world and our watershed!
