Sand Point Nature Preserve

The Sand Point Nature Preserve is one of the most critical protected coastal lands in the Saginaw Bay Watershed, and probably one of the most important in the Great Lakes.  We may be biased, but that actually doesn't come from us...it came from federal conservation professionals who recognized that the funding made available for the purchase of Sand Point Nature Preserve through the North American Wetlands Conservation Act was money well spent.  This Preserve, our largest, currently covers approximately 180 acres, and includes 5 miles of well established trails.  The Preserve is home to many dozens of bird species, including Sandhill Cranes, Great Egrets, Wood Ducks, Great Blue Herons, songbirds of all varieties (Flycatchers, Tanagers, Swallows, Sparrows, Jays, and the list goes on), and Bald Eagles.  In fact, have you ever seen a Bald Eagle up close...I mean, REALLY close...out in its natural habitat?  Visit Sand Point and you will.  Zak Branigan, our Executive Director, reported that so far in 2012 he has visited the Preserve 9 times, and has seen the resident Bald Eagles up close, soaring around Mud Lake and through our spacious meadow, every single time but one (and it was pouring rain that time). In late 2012, SBLC plans to add another 56 acres to the Preserve, making it truly our crown jewel.
