Michigan Sugar Trails

Location: Bay County
Partnership originally formed: 2014
Size: 26 acres

Michigan Sugar Trails is made possible by a unique agreement between the Conservancy and our valued partner, Michigan Sugar Company. While this land remains under the ownership of Michigan Sugar Company, the daily operation and care of the site are handled by the Conservancy and our stewardship team. Michigan Sugar generously opens the land to the public as a nature preserve and trail network, with our assistance.

The SBLC rehabilitated and developed a natural space with dedicated single-track trails for mountain bikes, trail running, and hiking. The 26-acre Michigan Sugar Trails site is located on the Middlegrounds with trails open to a wide variety of users. Birders, fishermen, walkers, runners, and cyclists can all come and enjoy the trails for recreational purposes.

Since its creation, Michigan Sugar Company and the Conservancy have made significant improvements to the site to reduce flooding on trails, improve safety and the user experience, update signage, and provide ample, safe public parking and a bicycle repair station.

Single-track, natural surface trails do not exist elsewhere in Bay City. The existing trail network loops throughout the site and covers a variety of terrain, providing quality riding experiences for riders of all levels.
